How is life going to change in terms of genetics?

How is life going to change in terms of genetics?

  1. Hello Alisha,

As we cannot see into the future, we can only guess how life will change, but we can look at what has happened in the past, and what is happening now to help us predict what may happen.
Studies into human illnesses caused by genes which are not working properly, such as Parkinson’s disease and muscular dystrophy, lead us to hope that we will be able one day to replace those genes with ones that work .
There are also studies going on at the moment to introduce a gene into rice which will produce plants with a high level of vitamin A in the grain. This could be of great benefit to people in, for instance Bangladesh where many of the people do not get enough vitamin A in their diet.
Already we produce insulin by putting human insulin genes into E. coli bacteria and culturing them. This has made it much cheaper and means that insulin does not have to be taken from slaughtered pigs and cows. Many other drugs can and are beginning to be produced more cheaply by such methods.
These are just some of the many things happening in gene tics. It is a very exciting field to do work in at the moment.
