Is it true that global warming is happening?

Is it true that global warming is happening? What is your evidence and what species will it affect?
Lara Mclean from Greater London (age 5-14)

  1. Hi Lara. Yes, global warming is undoubtedly happening. We’ve seen an increase in global surface temperatures of about 0.75 degrees centigrade in the last 100 years, with acceleration in the rate of warming in the last 30 years. Because the warming is so rapid it is already affecting some species, particularly those living at high latitudes (esp. the poles) where the warming has been greatest. Other very vulnerable species include those living in mountain ecosystems that are very sensitive to higher temperatures, and species in the ocean like corals, that become bleached by high water temperatures.
