  1. Well, we’ve certainly been dreaming up aliens for many centuries. German astronomer Johannes Kepler wrote an early science fiction story, Somnium, in 1634 in which he envisaged aliens on the Moon. Today, the question is very much linked to the search for planets on which aliens could possibly live. Since 1995, astronomers have discovered over 200 extra solar planets. They don’t necessarily have aliens living on them, but it’s certainly a start. Some day we may discover more Earth-like planets, and who knows, maybe even alien life…

  2. Nicola,

Who knows, but we are looking for them. See the SETI institute in the US (www.seti.org) which has a new telescope (called the Allen Telescope Array) which started in October looking at the nearest million stars for signs of alien radio emission. With new radio telescopes coming on line in the next 20 years, I think we will really start answering this question. It is a fun time to ask your question and we need people to help us.

  3. This Big Question was answered by Jodrell Bank – University of Manchester in their National Science and Engineering Week Event – see
