Just how does a caterpillar turn into a butterfly inside a pupa?

  1. When a caterpillar has completed its feeding it seeks a sheltered place where it will turn into a chrysalis or pupa. While it is in the pupal stage, the body tissues of the caterpillar break down and become a liquid. Embryionic cells that had been lying dormant inside the caterpillar then begin to divide and rebuild the insect in the form of the adult.
