What did dinosaurs evolve from!?

  1. Hi Francesca,

Dinosaurs evolved from a group of reptiles called Archosaurs. 206 million years ago a supercontinent was starting to break up into smaller pieces and there was a mass extinction. The Archosaurs which survived branched out into new forms, and their descendants took advantage of the many newly available ways of making a living offered by the lack of competition.

Archosaurs were rather sprawling creatures. They were set apart from similar kinds of reptiles by having broad large skulls and ankle bones which are thought to have given the Dinosaurs and Pterosaurs, their most successful land-based descendants, the advantage of being able to stand upright and on two legs.
