What is mass made of?

What is mass made up of and what is inside it that wants to pull other bits of mass towards it?

  1. Matter is stuff which has mass, for example the molecules that make up cells in our bodies or planets in our solar system. The molecules are made of atoms, which are in turn made up of electrons moving around a nucleus. The nucleus of an atom contains protons and neutrons. Particle physicists now know that these protons and neutrons are actually made up of quarks and gluons.

As you have rightly said, something with mass pulls other things with mass or energy towards it. It does this by telling space-time how to curve. Think of sitting on a mattress and placing a ball next to you. The ball will roll towards you because you have distorted the flat mattress into being a curved mattress. In the same way as your weight curves the mattress, matter curves space-time and makes other things move towards it.

  2. Ok, so then the question which comes to mind is what is inside mass that causes space to distort?
