What was there before the big bang?

What was there before the big bang?
Allan Hopkins from Surrey (age 45-54)

Answer:

Space and time were created at the Big Bang. So “before” the start of time is like trying to get to 91 degrees north of the equator. It has no meaning.

  1. This is indeed what Stephen Hawking has postulated. However, we are assuming a cause without an initial cause. Some people would react to this question by claiming that the initial cause must have been God. Unfortunately this presents an infinite regress also. A powerful, all omniscient and omnipotent creator must have had a cause, an extremely complex cause at that. You can’t explain the complexities of the Universe with more complexity. I agree with Richard Dawkin’s theory that however the Universe began it has to be something relatively simple as complexity develops following simpler events. The fact is there IS an answer we just don’t know it yet and unfortunately may never know due to our limitations.
