Why are we made out of cells?

Why are we made out of cells?

  1. Within every living organism there are specific functions that need to be carried out. There are so many jobs that need to be done, that it would be impossible for each cell to be able to do every job. It would be a little like having a single factory that made everything in the world. The cells have to be completely independent of each other in as much as they must be able to carry on functioning if their neighbour dies. They must be able to carry out their own “life” processes such as making energy. If the job of the liver was carried out by one cell, then if that cell failed, then the liver would fail and we would die. So by having many small parts that add up to doing the whole job, then some parts can be lost and the job will still get done. There is the issue of diffusion, but that is another question.
