Why is one year to us seven years to a dog?

  1. Hi Francesca.

A year to us is really the same as a year to a dog, but we say it’s 7 years to a dog so we can appreciate that dogs age quicker than we do. For example take a 10 year old dog. 10 years is quite old for a dog, but quite young for a human. If you multiply 7 by 10, you get 70. So a 10 year old dog will have aged like a 70 year old human. At 10 years old, a dog may start to lose hearing or eyesight, or may have joint and bone problems, much like a 70 year old human. I hope that answers your question.
