Why is the world round?

Why is the world round?

  1. The Earth and the sufficiently heavy bodies in the solar system will adopt a round shape because of …gravity.
Gravity is a force directly proportional to the mass of the object and is equal in all direction. As the planet forms, its matter is pulled towards the centre of the planet in equal measure, leading over time to a spherical object.

…but building on this idea, the Earth is also rotating, and this create a centrifugal force (pulling away from the rotation axis) that create a slight bulge at the equator while flattening the poles.

A good illustration can be found here: http://www.hockeycosom.net/planet_earth_complete/composition_planet_earth.html
