Will humans live and breathe underwater?

In the future will it be possible for humans to adapt to living and breathing underwater?

  1. Dolphins and whales are both mammals (humans are mammals too) that have evolved from land dwelling animals. Although they can’t breathe underwater, they can certainly happily live in it and can hold their breaths for a long time.
    In fact, all life started in the water. Thus all land dwelling animals (including the ancestors of dolphins and whales) adapted to breathe air after an aquatic origin and being able to breathe underwater.
    So if the past is anything to go buy; given millions of years and some sort of pressure to get into the water (e.g. land becoming inhabitable), humans could adapt. Though in the short-term, I think our best bet for an underwater world lies in technology.
