How does your voice work?

How does your voice work?
Daisy Ritblat from Greater London (Age 5-14)

How does sound come out of our voice box?
Sophia Agiadis from Stockton on Tees (Aged 5-14)

One Response

  1. Through vibrations and air. When you speak, air from your lungs is forced through your larynx (‘voice box’), causing the muscles in your larynx to vibrate and make the sound. Think of an acoustic guitar: when you pluck a string it vibrates and the box of the guitar amplifies the sound, just as does your lungs and mouth cavity when you speak. You change the length and therefore the pitch of the sound when you change the shape of your mouth/tongue and amount of air (volume). (The guitar does this with different thicknesses of strings and the force of the pluck.)
