When will the sun cool down?

When will the sun cool down?
Jakep from Leicester (Age 5-14)

One Response

  1. Jakep,

In about 6 billion years. The sun is roughly half way through it’s life (like me!) and then it will run out of hydrogen at it’s core and expand to become a “red giant”. Ironically, as it expands, the surface of the sun will cool from approximately 5000 degrees now, to just a few thousand degrees. However, the core temperature of the sun will increase from 15 million degrees now, to over 100 million degrees when Helium can be burnt in a nuclear reaction. Hope that helps!
