Are there differences between the brains of men and women?

Are there histological, physiological and/or functional differences between the brains of men and women and how are these determined by hormonal differences and temporal variations?
John/Ayr from South Ayrshire (Age 55+)

Do males and females have the same brains?
Anisah from West Yorkshire (age 5-14)

  1. There are several areas of the brain that differ in volume between male and females. These include nuclei in the hypothalamus, amygdala and olfactory bulb. There are also differences in synaptic morphology in the hippocampus, hypothalamus, visual cortex and amygdala. There are several lines of evidence that suggest that these differences arise through developmental exposure to differing amounts of the sex hormones testosterone and estrogen. There has been a lot of work investigating the sexually dimorphic nucelus of the preoptic area which shows large difference in size in male and females. The volume of this nucleus changes depending on exposure to oestrogen or testosterone.
