Is the universe alive?

Is the universe alive?

  1. Most scientists would say that ‘alive’ means a system that can use energy to grow and adapt to its environment.

The Universe does seem to be expanding but it shows no sign of adapting to the environment. Instead it IS the environment.

So no, it is not alive in the conventional sense.

  2. The universe may in fact be nested within an environment greater than it. It’s just that we humble observers are too deep within to be able to see what’s beyond.

For those fascinated with the question of whether the universe may be alive, I strongly recommend Lee Smolin’s “Life of the Cosmos.”
