What is the point of human toenails and how long will they take to disappear through evolution?

  1. I think the point of both toenails and fingernails is to protect the ends of our digits. As to how long until they disappear, well, in order for evolution to act on them in the direction of gettting rid of them, there would first need to be a genetic error leading to toes without nails. Then there would need to be an advantage to human survival in not having them, for example, for women to find they much prefer men without toenails, or vice versa, so that the gene for no-toenails would be passed on to the next generation. If this actually happened it would still take an enormously long time for people to all end up without toenails and I’m not sure that no-toenails would be so much more attractive so I’m afraid I suspect they are here to stay!
