Where did the planets and stars get their material from?

  1. Stars and planets form from clouds of dust and gas. And that materials itself is ejected from stars when they explode as supernovae. Stars generate heavier elements once the hydrogen and helium runs out, and even heavier elements are formed in a supernova, so with each generation of star formation the composition of the dust shows a higher abundance of heavy elements. To get planets like the Earth and Mars, we might have needed 3 generations of star formation.
