Where does the fat on people go once they lose weight?

  1. When people lose weight what they are actually doing in eating less energy (in food) than they use in being active. Because they are not eating as much energy as they need each day they are having to get the rest from within their bodies. They do this by using the fat that is stored around the body. So the fat is removed from the storage cells and broken down to release energy with any bits left over passing out of the body, similar to how we get energy from food and get rid of our waste. The fat is then gone from those cells so people get thinner.

When people are really starving and there is no fat left in their bodies they begin to break down protein (muscle) to provide energy instead. This is why starving people are so very thin and don’t have much muscle. It’s very dangerous and sad and people eventually will die when they have nothing left inside to get energy from.
