Which is more powerful, nuclear fusion or nuclear fission, and can it be a safe form of energy?

  1. Nuclear fusion is the better energy prospect for the very long term. Nuclear fission, which is what we use in power stations at the moment, splits atoms of uranium, and although the total amount we can generate from the world’s uranium is large, it is a finite resource. Nuclear fusion, which may become viable in the middle of the 21st century, joins atoms of hydrogen, and the amount of available hydrogen is practially unlimited (since it’s in water).

As to the question of safety, all forms of energy involve some risk – every industry, sadly, has some “industrial accidents”. However, current reactor designs involve many safety systems working on top of each other, and some reactors are designed to make drastic accidents physically impossible – the conditions for an explosion, for example, could not occur.
