  1. Hi Noa,

The reason why some people are naturally faster runners than others is due to their muscles. Skeletal muscle (the muscles we use during exercise) is basically made-up of fast and slow twitch fibres. As the name suggests, fast twitch fibres are much better than slow twitch fibres at generating short bursts of strength and speed. Having more fast twitch fibres can be very useful to a sprinter as they need to generate a lot of force very quickly, indeed, the most successful sprinters have a predominance of fast twitch muscle. The amount of fast and slow twitch fibres human muscle contains is genetically determined, which means that some people are born naturally fast runners. However, whilst fast twitch fibres can contract more rapidly and forcefully, they also tire very quickly, so you may find that your speedy classmates might not do so well in longer races!
