Should I drink hot water with lemon to cleanse my liver?

In yesterday’s newspaper readers were advised to drink a glass of hot water with lemon every morning to ‘cleanse the liver’. Is this true and, as a healthy person, do I need to?
Lorna Mansell from Surrey (Age: 45-54)

  1. This is a myth – there is nothing magically cleansing or detoxing about lemon juice for the liver. The liver deals with everything that we digest and absord in the gut and so is a busy organ. Like the rest of the body it will benefit from eating a healthy balanced diet containing plenty of fruit and vegetables. Some like to claim that the high vitamin C content of lemon juice allows the liver to neutralise free redicals filtered out of the blood stream. However there are many different antioxidants in fruits, vegetables and other foods which act together to keep the whole body in great health and it is the livers job to filter and deal with everything we eat and drink. Eat a healthy balanced diet and your liver will be just fine.

  2. Drink a few glasses of tap water each day and your liver will clense itself. It’s been doing that every day of your 45-54 years Lorna and that’s what it’s good at.

Especially, you shouldn’t confuse detox products that you can buy over the shelf with tapwater. They are a product of highly paid marketing staff and there is no reason to believe that they will do anything at all to clense your liver !
