What causes black rings under your eyes?

What causes black rings under the eyes, when you are tried or ill and why do hot camomile teabags remove the blackness?
Pauline Gilbert from Warwickshire (Age: 55+)

  1. This is usually either because the blood vessels around your eyes are dilated or the skin is pale so that the veins can be seen.

I’m not sure teabags are proven to help, but effects they have could be due to cooling the area (and causing the vessels to constrict, which would also be true for things like cucumber).

Permanent dark rings around eyes can be something that is just inherited, but may be a medical problem worth checking with a GP.
