Why are yawns infectious?

When I see someone yawn, I yawn too. Why is that?
Rob Vick from Bath and North East Somerset (Age: 55+)

  1. I’ve heard two theories as to why and have no idea which is true : )

The first being that we yawn because we think there isn’t enough oxygen in the blood, so yawning makes us breathe deeper and so have more oxygen. Other people ‘catch’ the yawn as if there is too little oxygen in the air they need more too.

The second is that as pack animals as we go to sleep, or get sleepy, we yawn, and pass it from person to person, to show any would be predators watching how many teeth there are in the group, so they shouldn’t bother attacking.

    Hope that helps
