Why do we have feelings?

Why do we have feelings?
Rachel Wordley from Greater London (Age: 5-14)

  1. Hi Rachel,
I am assuming that you mean emotions such as happiness, love and sadness.
Human beings have evolved as social animals, that is we live in groups. The feelings we have give us a reason to work together, protect and help each other. This has meant that we can do much more than if we lived solitary lives. For instance old people benefit from the strength of younger people, and the young benefit from the experience of their older friends and relatives.
Feelings such as anger also do this, in that we feel angry towards those who have gone against the rules of the group.
