Could you create an animal with chemistry?

Could you create an animal with chemistry?

  1. At the moment no, but in the future……..?

Animals are really quite complicated in comparison to other forms of life, especially microbes. Of the microbes viruses are the simplest and then bacteria. There have been several simple viruses made chemically, however, viruses aren’t technically alive as they need another organism to divide.

Work is currently underway to make the first bacteria with chemistry, this is in the J. Craig Venter Institute in the USA. They are trying to chemically made a bacteria called Mycoplasma genitalium, which is even by bacteria standards, very very simple.

So at the moment scientists are trying to make simple organisms with chemistry with some success, so I guess one day they may be able to make animals with chemistry.

But do you think this is a good thing to do?
