How are nuclear bombs made?

How are nuclear bombs made?
Joseph from Kent (Age 5-14)

One Response

  1. Nuclear bombs come in two kinds: ones containing fissile material, and ones that are based on fusion.
The original bombs where based on enriched Uranium, a material on fisioning (falling apart) emits a few neutrons and releases energy. If there is more Uranium nearby, that will then fall apart as well, emitting more neutrons and energy, until we get a run away reaction… Boom!
This requires enough Uraniam to start such a chain reaction, a critical mass. Most bombs consist of smaller masses, that are brough together by an explosive mechanism to set of the reaction.
