How can we know what is happening at the edge of space?

How can we know what is happening at the edge of space at this moment in time, or indeed the universe itself, being as the edge of the observable universe is about 12 billion light years away and therefore the information we receive is that amount of time out of date? How do we know where our galaxy is now in relation to the whole of the universe? If what we are looking back in time all those billions of years, we cannot know the reality of the universe now, can we?

  1. Yes you are absolutely correct. We do not know the reality of the Universe. We are limited by the speed of light, in that it takes a long time for light associated with events that are happening at the edge of the Universe to reach our light measuring instruments.
