How do you make an atomic bomb?

How do you make an atomic bomb?
Leighton Clark from Middlesbrough (Aged 5-14)

One Response

  1. In essence don’t. They are very difficult and dangerous and the world will not like you for it.

There are many type of atomic bombs all of which have grow out of research completed by the manhattan project in the US towards the end of the second world war. This developed two type of bombs the fat man and little boy. In both cases either the highly reactive isotope of Uranium U235 or Plutonium was smashed into another piece to form a critical mass and then compressed further by the explosion. A chain reaction was started breaking each atom down by fission until this reaction became uncontrollable. This generated an enourmous amount of heat and radiation.

Since then man has exploded a number of nuclear weapons mostly underground to test the weapons as they were developed during the 1950s – 1980s.

Today several countries have nuclear weapons but the enourmous destructive power of these weapons has meant they have never been used and we all hope they will never be used.
