  1. Many microbes can live without oxygen. Indeed oxygen is toxic for them

  2. There are many bacteria and other microorganisms that can live without oxygen. These are referred to as anaerobic bacteria (literally without air). They live in your gut for example as well as in environments with little or no oxygen like sediments in lakes and the sea. Most of these bacteria re very smelly because they produce gases like hydrogen sulphide instead of using oxygen.
