Why are words always backwards if you look in a mirror?

  1. Hi Victoria. It’s simply because you turn the paper round to make it face the mirror. Imagine writing on transparent paper, then turning it round so that you could see the word from the back – the word would be backwards.

There is another way of facing the writing to the mirror – you can turn it bottom-to-top, rather than the usual left-to-right. If you do the head-over-heels method you will see that the writing is no longer backwards – it’s upside down instead. So, what you see is just the result of what you’ve done to your writing.
