Why do girls have longer hair then boys?

Why do girls have longer hair then boys?
Bradley Kelly from Tyne and Wear (Aged 5-14)

  1. Really this is a question about society rather than science. There is no scientific reason why girls should have longer hair than boys and I’m not aware that girls can grow longer hair than boys if they tried to!

I think the reason girls often have long hair and boys don’t is that in the past girls weren’t really allowed to work whereas boys did and long hair would get in the way so boys would cut it off. Also people tended to think that girls looked better with long hair. It’s fine for girls to have short hair and boys to have long hair these days though.

There are other effects on hair that are different between boys and girls, for example it’s more common for men to go bald as they get older, and when women are pregnant they often grow more hair. These things are to do with the hormones (such as testosterone and oestrogen) that are in different concentrations in men and women.
