  1. I visited, many years ago, the Zillertal in Austria. They had a dialect of German slightly different from a valley on the other side of a dividing mountain range, which formed a rather imposing barrier to intercourse. I attribute the difference to one thing: isolation. That also happened when tribes of early human beings separted and migrated away to other parts of the earth in response to pressures from a changing environment. Over large periods of time, variability in speaking habits and speaking contexts (warmer, colder, etc.) caused new “languages”. Language, I believe, originates in the sounds made possible by anatomical as well as behavioral effects. That is my guess at an answer to the question, why are there different languages.
